Caring for your new tattoo

Your tattoo is an open wound and a piece of art at once. Treat it gently for a few weeks and it’ll settle in beautifully for a lifetime. Here’s exactly how.

Start here Your fresh tattoo is sealed in Second Skin — details just below.
Step one

Your Second Skin

Cory seals every fresh tattoo under Second Skin — a thin, breathable, waterproof film that protects it like a bandage through its earliest healing. You can shower with it on, and it shields the tattoo from dirt and friction during the days that matter most.

What’s normal: a cloudy pool of ink, plasma, and a little blood often gathers under the film. It can look alarming and is completely expected — don’t drain it or peel the film back to “clean” it.

Leave it on for as long as Cory told you (the timing depends on the piece). If it lifts at the edges, balloons with fluid, or starts to leak, it’s done its job — take it off and move to gentle washing.

Taking it off

  1. Do it in a warm shower — heat and water loosen the adhesive.
  2. Find an edge and peel slowly, pulling it back over itself rather than straight up.
  3. Stretch it low and flat as you go, letting warm water run between the film and your skin.
  4. Once it’s off, gently wash the tattoo, pat dry, and begin the routine below.

Slow and easy — peeling fast can tug at healing skin.

      Is this normal?

      Healing vs. a problem

      Totally normal

      • Redness, warmth, and tenderness right around the tattoo for the first few days
      • Clear or ink-tinted fluid weeping in the first 1–2 days
      • Light swelling, especially on hands, feet, and ankles
      • Itching, flaking, and peeling like a sunburn around days 5–14
      • A dull, cloudy, or “milky” look while the deeper skin heals

Check in with us / a doctor

      • Redness, swelling, or pain that spreads or worsens after day 3–4
      • Thick yellow or green pus, or a bad smell
      • Red streaks moving away from the tattoo
      • Fever, chills, or feeling generally unwell
      • A rash, hives, or intense itching that could signal an allergic reaction
